Happy Birthday today (Aug. 24) to American multi-instrumentalist David Frieberg; after beginning his career as a coffee house folk musician, he came to prominence as the founding bassist for San Francisco 60s/early-70s psychedelic rock band, Quicksilver Messanger Service (he also contributed vocals, keyboards, guitar, viola & percussion); best known for their 1970 US #49 single Fresh Air from the album Just for Love, their extended, free-form style was a major influence on future Jam bands; David joined Jefferson Airplane in 1972 for the tour promoting their final studio LP Long John Silver & appeared on their 1973 final live album, Thirty Seconds Over Winterland; David was also a founding member of spin-off group, Jefferson Starship, remaining with them until 1984, then rejoining two decades later in time for the 2005 Jefferson Family Galactic Reunion tour…
