Happy Birthday today (Jan. 9) to New York rock, blues & pop singer, songwriter & actor David Johansen, best known as lead vocalist of seminal proto-punk band, The New York Dolls & their influential pair of cult-fave albums, New York Dolls (1973) & Too Much Too Soon (1974); their sound prefigured much of what was to come in the punk rock era, while their visual style influenced the look of many 80s new wave & glam metal groups; David is also recognized for his solo work under his own name (his 1978 self-titled debut yielded the popular alternative radio single, Funky But Chic) & under the lounge lizard pseudonym of Buster Poindexter (1987 US #45 Hot Hot Hot); between 2000-2002, he recorded two albums of country-folk-blues under the name David Johansen & The Harry Smiths; after reuniting, The New York Dolls have released three more albums - One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This (2006), Cause I Sez So (2009) &Dancing Backward in High Heels (2011)…
