Happy Birthday today (Oct. 1) to Jerry Martini, who first came to prominence as saxophonist for the popular & influential 1967-75 psychedelic soul/funk band, Sly & the Family Stone; it was at Jerrys suggestion that Sly & brother Freddie combined their two bands to form The Family Stone, & he soon became one of its key figures; they were the first major American rock band to have an integrated, multi-gender lineup; they were inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1993; in 2004-05, Jerry helped form tribute band FamilyStoneExperience, bringing together several Family Stone Alumni; in 2006, after a stint with Princes touring band, he reunited with the original Family Stone, currently touring as The Family Stone Project; Jerry was also a member of California funk-rock band Rubicon during the late-70s (1978 US #28 hit Im Gonna Take Care of Everything)…
