Happy Birthday today (Sept. 29) to vocalist/guitarist Mark Farner, who came to prominence as the co-lead vocalist & guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad (later, simply Grand Funk), the most successful US heavy metal band of the 70s; they sold over 20 million albums between 1969-75, scoring two #1 hit singles & several more Top 40 hits; Mark wrote and/or sung the majority of their most famous songs, including Im Your Captain (Closer to Home) (1970 US #22), Footstompin Music (1971 US #29), Rock & Roll Soul (1972 US #29), Bad Time (1974 US #4) & remakes of The Loco-Motion (1974 US #1) & Some Kind of Wonderful (1974 US #3); prior, he began his career in Michigan Grank Frunk precursor band, Terry Knight & The Pack; after Grand Funk broke up in 1976 over musical differences, Mark pursued a solo career, releasing his first self-titled solo album in 1977 & his second, No Frills, in 1978; he toured with Ringo Starrs All-Starr Band from 1994-95; the three original members of Grand Funk reteamed in 1996 & recorded the concert set Bosnia & a few new selections for a major anthology project; Mark resumed his solo career after three years (centered around Contemporary Christian music) & currently tours with his band, N′rG, playing a mix of Grand Funk classics & his solo material…
