Happy Camp Complex Tuesday Morning Update September 9, 2014 Video: Happy Camp Complex leadership brief firefighters at base camp on Scott River Road about the current status and expectations for the fire, as well as the fire weather forecast for the day. Date Started: August 11, 2014 Size of the complex: 103,814 acres Containment for the complex: 30 percent Estimated Containment Date: September 20, 2014 Structures Damaged or Destroyed: 2 Total Personnel: 2,637 Resources: 75 crews, 13 helicopters, 108 engines, 20 dozers, 50 water tenders Weather and Fire Behavior: Yesterday, gusty northwest winds caused spot fires over Scott River Road and the Scott River, south of Scott Bar and Mill Creek Road and north of the McGuffy Creek drainage. The southeastern flank also burned actively yesterday, producing a large smoke column. Embers from the column started five small spot fires south of Cayenne Ridge. Overnight, crews successfully completed fire line around all five spots. Today gusty winds from the northwest will again challenge firefighters, especially with the smoke inversion likely lifting earlier, exposing fuels to sunlight earlier in the afternoon. Operations: Firefighters and dozer operators will concentrate today on securing all spot fires on the east and southeast flanks, including the spot fire across the Scott River, while remaining vigilant for any new growth later in the day. In critical areas, firefighters will search in grid pattern to search for new spots. On the south perimeter, crews will mop up the spots near Cayenne Ridge. Crews are also finishing work on contingency lines to the north of the fire and east of Scott River Road. On the western perimeter, firefighters are retrieving five miles of hose and checking for hot spots. Traffic Control: Hwy 96 is open. Expect delays as pilot cars escort travelers through part of an 11-mile section from Hamburg to Horse Creek. Traffic may be halted if conditions warrant. Scott River Road is closed from Hwy 96 to Bridge Flat. Mill Creek Road has been closed. Residents leaving the Scott Bar area should avoid travelling south on Scott River Road into the active fire area. For the latest highway closure information, please contact the California Department of Transportation at 1-800-427-7623 or visit dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi. Evacuations: A five-mile section of Mill Creek Road from its intersection with Scott River Road was placed under mandatory evacuation yesterday afternoon. Scott River Road from Bridge Flat to the junction with Hwy 96 remains under mandatory evacuation. An advisory evacuation is in effect from the Klamath River Bridge to Scott River Road, including Hamburg and both sides of Hwy 96. Residents should remain prepared to evacuate, if fire conditions worsen. An evacuation center is available at Winema Hall at the Siskiyou County Fairgrounds in Yreka. For assistance with livestock evacuation, or for more information, please contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department at (530) 841-2900. Additional information is also available at co.siskiyou.ca.us/content/emergency-information. Forest Closures and Restrictions: Some roads, trails and lands in the Klamath National Forest within and adjacent to the Happy Camp Complex, the July Complex and the Beaver Fire have been closed to protect the public and firefighters. Please visit inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/4036/ for details and maps of closure areas. 75 percent of the Klamath National Forest remains open to public use. Safety: Drivers on Hwy 96 and other roads near the fire should use extra caution. Expect heavy traffic and fire equipment on roads. Air Quality: A Clean Air Respite Center is located at the Karuk Tribe Senior Nutrition Center at 64101 Second Ave. in Happy Camp. The center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours when smoke conditions worsen. For more detailed air-quality information, visit californiasmokeinfo.blogspot/.
