Happy Independence Day to all my Liberians around the world. In - TopicsExpress

Happy Independence Day to all my Liberians around the world. In the light of all of the debate on whether or not people should celebrate this years independence day due to the current state of Liberia, here is my response: Celebration entails many different things and is done in many forms. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate lets take time today to pray for our nations government, corruption, lack of a decent educational system, the 85% of people living in severe poverty, lack of clean drinking water and electricity, girls and women inequality, the rapid spread of Ebola that has claimed the lives of hundreds. Let today not be the only day that we are uncomfortable with the sad reality that is Liberia. For me, it is my dissatisfaction that led me on the path to start my organization, The Power to Do Something. I am saddened that our accomplishments are not reflective of 167 years of Independence. Such reality should impact all of us as Liberians to activate our power to do something, so that Liberia rise to a standard that is reflective of Africas oldest republic. That doesnt necessarily mean that everyone needs to start an organization. There are many ways that we all could contribute to the rebuilding process in Liberia (human capital, financial capital, volunteerism, speaking up and speaking out, exchanging ideas and wisdom, transparency, accountability supporting organizations and individuals that are doing positive work, representing ourselves as Liberians with integrity in every aspects of our lives, and most importantly, praying daily for our nation). Complaining with no action is void. Although, we are not where we should be, thank God we are not where we were. Today we are an Independent nation, a nation that has survived 14 years of a civil war, and has maintained some kind of peace for the last 11 years. Liberians are the most resilient people that I know. Therefore, I am confident that the power lies in you and I. It is in the spirit of that resiliency that we celebrate today. Mama Liberia will rise again! With every fiber in me, I pledge to do my part. The very rhythm of my heart proudly beats to the sound of Liberias traditional drums. Happy Independence Day to you all! Be safe, take time to reflect, pray and take positive actions in being the change you want to see in Liberia and the world.
