Happy Independence day mo ti lil! Professor James Meade couldnt always be right. Even Nobel prize winners make mistakes. This article describes our improbable success even if it is written by an outsider who makes certain generalisations and conclusions that us, who live in Mauritius know are not totally true. Still it is a pleasure to read. foreignpolicy/articles/2012/02/02/the_little_economy_that_could However I also have some less nice news to share There is something called the Gini coefficient- A measurement of the income distribution of a countrys residents. This number, which ranges between 0 and 1 and is based on residents net income, helps define the gap between the rich and the poor, with 0 representing perfect equality and 1 representing perfect inequality. In 1987 the Gini coefficient for Mauritus was 0.37, in 2006 it was 0.39 ( an increase of 0.02 over 19 years) but only 6 years later in 2012 it became 0.41. Everybody knows, feels, sees the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing but did we realise that this increase was so dramatic during the last 6 years. Even the government knows, as can be seen by a survey by the statistical bureau of Mauritius. see link. statsmauritius.gov.mu/English/StatsbySubj/Pages/HBS2012.aspx The question is- are they going to do anything about it? Are we?
