Happy New Sun to all ! The birth of the New Sun was celebrated since prehistoric time. It was around what we count today as 21-22 or 23 of December when the day restarts growing bigger again. When the leaders of Byzantium made christianship official, they needed to unify all different kinds of believing till then, so they smoothly replaced the birth of the new sun celebration by the birth of Christ. While evidences in the old scriptures show that Christ was NOT born in winter but mostly in the autumn, no one could read it or investigate it in that time, so it remained a rule. Till then, the old expression in Greek was Neos Helios or Neohelios which passed through Latin and exists today in French as No-ël. Never the less, the crowds continue thoughtlessly repeating Merry Christmas in that moment having nothing to do with that. The true fact is the start of the new sun or otherwise the New Year.
