Happy New Year everyone! Ive been thinking alot about Chucks - TopicsExpress

Happy New Year everyone! Ive been thinking alot about Chucks message from Sunday. Basically, how my walk with God needs to grow this coming year. Im going to get back to reading my Bible more. Then, this morning, I found this little note that I wrote a year or so ago and it just got me thinking again. Its not a rant so please dont be offended. Just me thinking on paper about why we do some of the things we do as Christians: During a recent visit to a friend in the hospital, I gazed out her 7th story window at the city below us. High on a nearby hill stood a well-known church building. In the early morning sun it was a grand sight indeed. The majestic multi-million dollar structure impressed me as something that must be the modern day American dream church. Almost the American version of the Temple Mount, sort of speak. As my eyes scanned the cityscape just blocks away from the church, I saw the roofs of homes scattered about in the trees. Not an upscale neighborhood by any means. Were there needs there? Needs that could have been met with some of the finances spent on the elaborateness of the church building? My thoughts turned then to the poor and hungry families that I had been working with through our food pantry the day before. Ive read enough to know that Jesus spent time in the unlovely places with the not so popular crowd in town. He wasnt drawn to the high-end, upscale, show-stopper mansions where the religious lived. He was drawn to the down to earth, plain and simple, where the needs are, genuine souls who had nothing to show off to please Him except their faith and trust. He spoke of the matters of the heart, not the outward eye appealing details carved in granite walls. So, do we have it all wrong? Is God please when we build impressive elaborate buildings when there are hungry children and lost souls sitting at our doorsteps? In the words of the famous phrase, what would Jesus do? It is not my intention to degrade the people that built that beautiful church, but do the intricate moldings and gold plated hardware, the solid mahogany pews and marble tile really impress God? Is He as pleased with us, and what we have to show off, as we are? Are those things necessary for us to be able to worship Him? Would we know what to do if it were all taken away?
