Happy New Year to the One World Running family, which stretches from Boulder to Africa, with many stops in between. Here is a brief Year in Review, with a special shout out to all the students who helped collect, sort, wash and pack shoes in 2014, including Jacob and Nicole Kantor of Just Shoe It, Bronwyn Heglebach of Fairview High School and the Fairview Honor Society, Hannah Green, Eric Schullek, Eagle Scout Mark Bruski, Stanton Chan and his clubmates from Go Far, and Brittney Olinger and Katie Ringdahl of ReRun Sneakers. They, like all of us at OWR, are volunteers. Please keep OWR in mind for any charitable donations. You can be sure it will make a big impact. 2014 began and ended with the One World Running Kumbo Marathon and shoe distribution in Kumbo, Cameroon, West Africa. In between were distributions on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud and Yankton Sioux American Indian reservations, and the annual OWR Mother Earth/Mother Tongue Trail Half Marathon. Thanks to the Newton Running volunteers who made the drive, and to Newton and Pearl Izumi for their continued support. OWRs Running Shoes for Recruits program supplies shoes to young men and women from around U.S. These mostly teenagers receive shoes after they send in a “Statement of Need.” Here are two examples: I would love to have a new pair of running shoes to workout in because the pair I currently own are torn up, the wrong size, falling apart and are not a good pair to run in. They have left scars on my feet from using them. So a brand new pair would be much appreciated.” “My family is in a huge bind and money is an issue and need shoes for training especially its ship dates is 2 months away and i cant train in boots please help me out in dire need of workout shoes thank you sincerely.” Track spikes, along with racing and training flats, went to the island of Dominica, Kenya and Ecuador. OWRs Haiti distribution included the donated work and dress shoes, and rubber boots, as well as the running shoes. The soccer cleats donated in 2014 went to San Pedro Sula, Honduras; baseball cleats to Cuba, as well as running shoes as part of the annual One World Running La Farola Run. Meso-American archeologist Payson Sheets continues bringing shoes to Ceren, El Salvador, while Dave Mackey, Terese Bernie and John and Cynthia Cunningham drive shoes to the American Reservations. Peter and Tara Jones and the Heglebach family delivered shoes to the tribal youth runners and tribal supporters from the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes to use in the 15th annual Sand Creek Massacre Spiritual Healing Run. Another large shipment went once again to Belize, this time to Toledo District, many to Mopan Maya youth. They were distributed by Ohio State University students who volunteered with the schools Buck-eye Serve program. The OSU students work with elementary and high school teachers and principals in distributing shoes. Wishing you all a wonderful New Year.
