Happy St. Patricks Day! Had a nice Irish breakfast this morning and Im looking forward to coming home this evening for my annual ritual - enjoying a pint (or 2) while watching The Quiet Man. I was introduced to this tradition nearly 40 years ago when my friends Bob Rolaf and Bob Randall started watching it. Every year we would watch the movie and then go to our favorite bar to celebrate - and none of us were Irish of course. Sure, the film is dated and presents a stylized and occasionally politically incorrect version of Ireland, but it is a joy to watch. Bob Rolaf is no longer with us, so I will hoist a pint in his memory. Completely lost touch with Bob Randall, but if anyone out there knows him - please give him my best. Although Im not Irish, St. Patricks Day has always been special for me. I remember when I was very young, my father came home from work in the city and gave me a plastic relief map of Ireland that he bought from a street vendor. I was immediately curious about this country. Our local church always had something going on for the holiday, and by the time I got to college I was officially introduced to Irish music by my good friend Danny Quinn when I served as engineer to the show that he and his brother hosted on WFDU. I consider myself an honorary Irishman.
