Happy Valentines Day. Jennie and I went to a private showing of Monuments Men in honor of the holiday. February is not too early for me to start banking credit for the third Hobbit movie in December by going to grownup movies like this. We went to the theater at the north end of Elkhart near the tollway, and the parking lot was empty. A few moms with kids went to the early showing of the Lego Movie, but there was no one else there for the noon showing of Monuments Men but us. Unlike the last grownup movie I went to, The Butler, which suffered, despite a compelling narrative, from a lack of elven archers, dwarvish axe wielders, and puzzled looking hobbits, Monuments Men proved to be a superior movie. It concerns a group of art historians who attempt to recover stolen Nazi art treasures during World War II. To their credit they recruit Galadriel, who disguises herself as a member of the French resistance who tracks whos stealing the art and where it is going. The rest of the cast is promising. Theres some young guy, Matt something or other, who shows promise. Bill Maury strikes me as the sort who would do well in a comedic setting but he manages well enough in this film. There was somebody named George Clancy who probably has a career in films ahead of him as well. I could see him playing a doctor in one of those hospital series. Anyway, thanks to Galadriel the allies save a lot of artwork that would have otherwise gone into Soviet hands. The Russians in response put most of their energies into developing world class hockey players who are amazing during the regular season and then disappear, Boris and Natasha style, in the playoffs. Highly recommended.
