Happy World Rhino Day!! It’s great to celebrate a species, and the Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) needs to be celebrated by everybody if we are to prevent this species’ extinction. With less than 50 individuals remaining, the Javan Rhinoceros is Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Besides poaching, the small population of rhinos in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java is threatened by habitat degradation, in particular the gradual reduction of food-plant resources due to forest closure and the invasion of sugar palm (Arenga obtusifolia), which now covers an estimated 60% of the national park and inhibits the growth of suitable rhino food plants. A new project funded by SOS - Save Our Species is coming to the rescue! Patrolling and monitoring will provide conservationists with a better understanding of the species’ ecology and behavior, and control of the invasive Arenga palm will allow succession of suitable food plants. Everything in our power will be done to provide round-the-clock protection for the Javan Rhino and prevent the species’ extinction.
