Happy birthday Joe Pass! Born January 13, 1929 as Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalacqua (no wonder he shortened his name!) in New Brunswick, New Jersey, of Sicilian descent, he was one of the greatest guitarist of all time. He got his first guitar at age 9, and with encouragement from his father was playing gigs at 14. While in New York he got hooked on heroin and spent much of the 50s in and out of jail but by 1962 he was back on his feet with his Gibson ES-175 and was on his way. He played with most of the jazz giants of the day, studio recordings and live performances. Him and Herb Ellis performed regularly and recorded together. Before his death on May 23, 1994 from liver cancer, he made an album of Hank Williams tunes with Roy Clark. He was a true virtuoso, and his like will never be seen again!
