Happy birthday, Leo Messi. Id like to pass on this message to present and future football fans on this occasion. And it is this. Never let rivalries get in the way of your appreciation of the beauty of the game. Heres my story. Right from the start, from his days at Old Trafford, Ive been a hardcore fan of Cristiano Ronaldo. His range of skills, his pace, his dead ball ability have never failed to amaze me till now. And because I was his fan, it became kind of a custom to criticise his greatest foe across La Liga, Leo Messi. I was influenced by all those silly arguments on the Internet. You know how they went. Messi wasnt as good with his national team. He couldnt perform that effectively without his Barca teammates, maybe he did not deserve all those Ballon dors, he doesnt pay his taxes(!!!). Looking back, I cant help but feel how stupid I had been. And because of these notions, I failed to enjoy completely what Messi produced day in day out on the football field for Barca, which was nothing short of pure magic. What changed me very recently was a video I saw on Youtube, Il be sharing it in the comments box. I came across it on one my friends profile, titled funnily enough Messi is a dog, a sick man. A dog focussed on an object has a single minded determination, same as Messi with a football was the theme. And it was brilliantly compiled. It was an eye opener. Here was a footballer, who could elevate the whole game to a pristine level with his amazing ball control, his repertoire of tricks, his intelligence and here I was, blind to all of this all these years because I was foolishly influenced to dislike Messi as a Cristiano Ronaldo fan myself. Lucky we are to be witnessing these two champions at the height of their powers as it happens. And yeah, belated birthday wishes to Zizou, the reason I started watching football.
