Happy birthday to Dian Fossey, the American zoologist who would have turned 82 on January 16th. Fossey spent 18 years living with and studying gorillas in the hills of the Virunga Volcanoes in central Africa and greatly changed scientific and public perceptions of the great apes. She wrote Gorillas in the Mist based on her experiences, which was later turned into a film. After a long battle to protect mountain gorillas from poaching, Fossey was unfortunately murdered in 1985 and the case remains open. The last entry in her diary read: When you realise the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.
