Happy birthday to JazzCorner roster drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, who is the 1st woman to win The GRAMMYs for Best Jazz Instrumental album for Money Jungle and the first person to win Grammys in both the Best Vocal Jazz Album and Best Instrumental Album. Quite a feat for this drummer her began her career at the age of 11 with a performance at the Wichita Jazz Festival with Clark Terry. The same year, she received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. When she was 12 years old she was profiled on the PBS kids biography program Rebop. In 1983, encouraged by her mentor, Jack DeJohnette, Carrington moved to New York, where she worked with Stan Getz, James Moody, Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, David Sanborn, and others. In the late 1980s Carrington relocated to Los Angeles, where she gained recognition on late-night TV as the house drummer for the Arsenio Hall Show, then again in the late 1990s as the drummer on the late night TV show VIBE, hosted by Sinbad. In 1996 she collaborated with Peabo Bryson on Always Reach For Your Dreams, a song commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games. Dr. Terri Lyne Carrington also received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2003. Since 2011, she also appears with Wayne Shorter (with John Pattituci and Danilo Perez), she is the Musical Director of the international Sing The Truth featuring Dianne Reeves Music, Lizz Wright and Angélique Kidjo , and she tours with Geri Allen and Esperanza Spalding as the ACS Trio. In 2011, she released The Mosaic Project, her fifth album overall and her first on Concord Jazz, which featured a number of singers. It won the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album and in 2013, Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue was released which received the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, This year, she produced Dianne Reeves Beautiful Life..Lots of accomplishments for this drummer and entrepreneur who is not yet 50! Happy birthday Terri Lyne. Since its inception in 2012, Terri Lyne Carrington has performed on International Jazz Day - April 30 including at the All-Star Global Concert in Osaka Japan.
