Happy birthday to Ronald Bertram Aloysius R. B. Greaves III. A nephew of Sam Cooke, Greaves was born in British Guyana, raised on a Seminole Native American Reservation in California and moved to Britain in 1963, recording several songs there under the name Sonny Childe. He later returned to the U.S. and laid to track Take A Letter, Maria (produced by the famous Atlantic Records President Ahmet Ertegün) at the famous recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The song delivered 2.5 million copies and hit gold status within a year. This was Greaves only self-authored hit. He also knocked it out of the park with his cover of Burt Bachrachs Theres Always Something There to Remind Me (A great little pop song Ive written about before.) The New York Times reported in its 2012 obituary that in the late 70s Greaves moved to Los Angeles attempting to revive his music career. Failing that, he began working in the tech industry, the paper reported without providing further details. (Im guessing it must have had something to do with sound engineering?)
