Happy teachers day to all my teachers ..... My new book with Prof. A P Girdhar Sir Road Map for success in career planning and advancement Importance of values of life Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidalaya, Haridwar is famous all over the world for its research projects especially in the subjects of Yoga and Vedic Mathematics. It has achieved great distinction and has earned reputation for having great scholars on its faculty-scholars in the real sense of the word whose only mission in life has been to encourage genuine research work, spread of knowledge and make better men. Their lives have always been the great source of inspiration and our aim in writing this brief description is to inspire the coming generations of students and scholars to walk in the foot-steps of these great teachers. As we see the students of today do not care for values of life like dedication, devotion and sincerity and they lack discipline. The most important reason for this situation is that we have got disconnected from our traditions and culture, and these values are not being inculcated in the conduct of the children either by parents or by teachers. The distinction of the teachers of Gurukula Kangri Vishvidhalaya is that they not only excel in the teaching of their respective subjects but they also do their best to teach values of life through their own conduct and character. A great teacher blessed his student in the following words- May God give you long life and also good sense to live it well. Obviously the speaker of this blessing wants to say that, Living is nothing but living well is everything. In his great poem A Grammarian Funeral, Robert Browning describes the life of the grammarian in the following words, This was the grace in him That first he would learn how to live Then he would live. Almost all the teachers of this great Vishwavidalaya excel not only in teaching of their respective subjects but also in teaching their students how to live meaningful lives not through preaching but through their own examples of simple living and high thinking. But due to limitation of space we will highlight the qualities of only a few ones and that too very briefly. My great teacher Prof. V. K. Arora is not with us today. He departed for his heavenly abode a few months ago. What I liked most in him was his very positive attitude towards life and his genuine interest in the welfare of his student, Whenever I did not succeed in an interview for the post of Lecturer and felt disappointed and despondent, he would console me by saying, Ajender, dont get disappointed. You are not the loser. The institute which has not selected you is the loser for not selecting a good teacher. He further said, Do you know why have you not been selected for this post. This is so because a better opportunity is waiting for you. His words proved right when I got selected as Lecturer in Mathematics in B K Birla Institute of Engineering & Technology, Pilani. Though he is no more in this world his memories will keep in me and many like me enthused and positive. Prof. V. K. Sharma is a fine example of a great teacher whose character and conduct have always been worthy of emulation for all those who have the great fortune of being his disciplines. Great are those persons who can keep their conduct and character neat and clean and above blemishes in this dirty world. He would always tell his students, Don’t let your parents down through your conduct, character and performance. Rather make them proud so that they may say, Yes, this is my son. Prof. V. K. Sharmas students have done well in life not only because of his excellent teaching of the subject but also by emulating his principles of simplicity, devotion, dedication, discipline and total loyality to work. His students remember him with a lot of love and a feeling of gratitude and try to emulate the principles followed by this great teacher. Prof. S. L. Singh who graced Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidalaya with his graceful presence as a teacher has been a true Gandian throughout his life. All his life even during his teaching hours as a Professor, he has dressed himself in Khadi kurta and pyjama. He has been a true follower of Gandhiji not only in the matter of dress but also in emulation of Gandiji’s principles of non-violence and truth. He is a great practitioner of the principles of forget and forgive. It has almost been impossible to provoke him to anger, hatred or jealously. He was worshipped as a god during his teaching days in the Vishvidhalaya and he is still reverend by his students. Though he taught us with full devotion and dedication the principles of lofty throughts and sweet emotions yet men’s power to learn and emulate is limited. There are some features which build the reputation of an educational institution of which infrastructure and faculty are most important. In this matter Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidalaya enjoys a unique reputation. It has the most enviable reputation of having the most scholarly faculty especially in the department of Statistics and Mathematics. At present such scholars as Prof. M.P. Singh, Prof. P. Pradhan and Dr. Manoj Kumar are the leading lights of the Department of Mathematics. Prof. M. P. Singh served as Dean, faculty of Science in the University for some time. At present he is guiding the Department as its Head. He is a great researcher who has guided a number of research scholars. Prof. Singh is not only a great scholar but he also possesses a lot of practical wisdom. He is a very straight-forward man not tolerating any kind of non-sense. He believes in the dictum, “Tit for tat”. “Do me good and I will do a lot of good to you, Do me bad and be ready to accept the same in an abundant measure” He is a hard task master and makes his students work hard. If you are in his company you cannot afford to be lazy. He keeps running (working hard) and makes you run (not giving you any leisure). The result? Almost all his students are doing well in their career. If you follow his principles of life you can also do well. Try! Prof. P. Pradhan is a great luminary of the Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidalaya, Haridwar. He is not only a great teacher but a great motivator. His motivation works wonders and he can take the best work even from very lazy and reluctant students. In his teaching he lays great emphasis on concepts. He tells his students, “Start with the basic concepts of your discipline and gradually go deeper into it”. He knows it very well and makes his students understand it that hard work never goes unrewarded. His numerous students, he has lost the count, are doing well by following principles taught by him. He enjoys proudly the moments when his students come to him and acquaint him with the kind of progress they have made in the sphere of academics. At presents Dr. Manoj Kumar is working in the Department of Statistics and Mathematics in Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidalaya, Haridwar. He loves and admires this Vishwavidalaya so much that no temptation has ever been able to wean him away from this great Institute of learning. He considers the Vishwavidalaya as a great temple of learning; considers it as God’s house and his veneration for it is phenenomal. He is a very unassuming and unpretentious man and his humility is almost unbelievable. He always tells his students to say to themselves- “I know nothing; if I start afresh I can learn everything”. There are great opportunities of advancement in life if we can benefit from the inspirations from the lives of these great men. How we wish to walk in his footsteps and earn the distinction of becoming good citizens!
