Size: 76,959 acres total for the complex Containment: 19 percent for the complex Date Started: August 11, 2014 Estimated Cost to Date: $44.7 million Total Personnel: 2,847 Committed Resources: 91 crews, 13 helicopters, 133 engines, 21 dozers, 44 water tenders, 29 mules, 8 horses A public meeting is scheduled in Fort Jones at the City Hall/Community Center this evening at 6 p.m. People interested in learning more about current conditions in Zone 2 of the fire are encouraged to attend. Weather Alert: A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. this evening due to a combination of strong winds and low relative humidity around 10-20 percent followed by recoveries tonight at 20-40 percent. Northeast to east winds are predicted at 10-20 mph through this evening, then 5-15 mph overnight. The weather could possibly cause fire to spread rapidly creating another large plume. Zone 2 Fire Information: The fire burned actively last night. However, in most areas it was mostly a backing and flanking fire. There were some spot fires observed in the drainages of the Tompkins Creek area. Firefighters used aerial drops to keep it within containment lines. Fire has made its way down to Scott River Road. No homes or structures have been reported destroyed or damaged. Firefighters conducted tactical ignition operations behind Scott River Lodge to the containment line last night, removing fuels and increasing the area of protection. A large smoke plume can be expected over the Happy Camp Complex as the fire is anticipated to be very active again today due to relatively low humidity. Spotting is probable. The fire is predicted to spread to the south/southeast in drainages towards Scott River Road. Fire managers expect there will be limited fire growth on the south end toward Packer Valley, and no movement is projected to occur on the west side of the fire. Evacuations: Mandatory evacuations were changed to advisory evacuations in the following locations on Wednesday: Hwy 96 from Klamath River Bridge, half a mile west of Grider Road and Walker Creek Road to Seiad Creek Road, including Ladd Road and both sides of Hwy 96 to Cade Mountain. The four-mile section of China Grade Road from its intersection with Elk Creek Road in Happy Camp has also been lowered to an advisory evacuation. Residents in these areas should remain ready to evacuate, if fire conditions worsen. Expect delays as pilot cars escort travelers through parts of an 11-mile section from Seiad Valley to Scott River Road. Traffic may be stopped if conditions warrant. Forest Closures and Restrictions: Curly Jack Campground reopened last night, and Sarah Totten Campground will remain closed for public safety due to fire activity. Roads, trails and lands within and adjacent to the Happy Camp and July complexes, as well as the Beaver Fire, are closed to protect public and firefighter safety. They are working to protect homes and other resources in and around the fire. However, top priority is to keep the public and firefighters safe. No structure, natural resource or cultural resource is worth the loss of human life. Reducing risk to firefighters and the public is the first priority in every fire management activity. Air Quality: Smoke will continue to be present in the communities of the Lower Klamath, Salmon and Trinity River drainages. A mostly northeasterly flow will push smoke to the southwest.
