Hard to credit that this happened over 50 years ago when American gunboats and submarines with nuclear missiles first came sailing up the Clyde, and people from all over Britain descended on the Holy Loch to confront them. The accompanying sound track is from the 1962 Folkways album ‘Ding Dong Dollar’ in which the singers/musicians (and the protestors) adopted the name ‘The Glasgow Eskimos’, an ironic reference to a dismissive remark by Captain Lanning, the commander of Yanqui mothership USS Proteus when his vessels were boarded by protestors using canoes and kayaks: Theyre just a bunch of goddam Eskimos. The singers include Morris Blythman, Josh MacRae, Nigel Denver, Jackie O’Connor, Jim McLean — and a few others who happened to be around that night…. PS Note the Special Branch men in their macs and trenchcoats striding across the beach while another photographs the Glasgow Anarchist Federation banner (and the anarchists around it!). arts.gla.ac.uk/…/SWE/TBI/TBIIssue9/McCulloch.html Dan and Leo youll enjoy this.
