HardTalk: Professor Peter Piot on the Ebola crisis Published on Oct 1, 2014 The man who first identified the Ebola virus back in the 70s, Professor Peter Piot, has told the BBC that it took 1000 Africans to die and two Americans to be repatriated before a public health emergency was declared. In an interview with the TV programme HARDtalk which will be broadcast on Friday, he also commented on the first diagnosis of a case outside Africa. This is going to happen again. That’s why it’s so vital that in West Africa we bring this epidemic under control. Because otherwise it will be a continuous source of infection for any other country in the world, he said.
