Harry Schiffley, 75, of Palatka, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following a brief illness. Harry was born on September 12, 1938 to Harry and Nancy Schiffley at the Columbia Hospital in Columbia, SC. He was a 1957 graduate of the Columbia High School and had attended the University of South Carolina for 1½ years. He left school in 1959 to work with Woolworth and transferred to Hattiesburg, MS later that year where he met his wife Tommie. Moving with Woolworth’s to Mobile, AL, St. Petersburg, FL, Clearwater, FL, Winterhaven, FL, then to Perrine, FL as manager. He left Woolworth’s to work as manager for Krest 5 & 10 Ace Hardware in Perrine. In 1987 he moved to Palatka coming from Perrine. In 1988 he started selling cars and went to work selling for United Insurance for 8 years and transferred to Life of Georgia and retired at the age of 63 1/2. Following retirement he went to work part time for Pizza Hut as a delivery driver. He served 8 years in the National Guard. He was adopted by his step-father, J. L. Mace in 1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church of San Mateo. Harry enjoyed socializing, going on cruises and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Schiffley, mother, Nancy Turner Mace and his adopted father, J.C. Mace. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Tommie Schiffley, of Palatka; a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Jonathan Strange of Palatka; a brother and sister-in-law, Julius and Elizabeth Mace of Palatka; a sister and brother-in-law, Sallie and Bob Oswald of Lexington, SC; a grandson, Preston Chauvin of Palatka; a granddaughter, Lacey Strange of Lakeland; many nieces and nephews and his beloved furry companions, Nancy and Sissy. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Rev. Garry Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill West Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In honor and celebration of Mr. Schiffley’s life a video tribute will be shown.
