Harry’s picks 073014 July is ending and this “handicapper” is mired in quicksand within the darkest cave in which even a 20/20 bat would have difficulty not banging into a wall- dark as a dungeon indeed- it’s the time of the year, to many good horses out there, is the dank winter any better to pick horses than the high summer? I’m not sure any statistics have been formulated concerning winning % during the various seasons? The best racing is still up ahead- On This weekend Saratoga will be the scene of the G1 Whitney Stakes and the G1 Test Stakes the latter a 7f 3yo fillies spectacular, and the Whitney will have a number of top horses competing including 2013 Belmont Stakes champion Palace Malice- Another top event to look forward to this weekend is the AG Vanderbilt G1 sprint- In fact there are not including this weekend’s action at Saratoga another nine G1 races to get paper and pencil out for- topped off by the G1 Hopeful Stakes for 2yo on September 1st- Following the closing of Saratoga the “championship” meeting holds court at Belmont Park and on Jockey Gold Cup day which is set for September 27th no less than 5 G1 events are on that program!! In Illinois, set for the 16th of August is the Arlington Millions XXXII! - Hopefully I’ll remember that the Millions is on the schedule as often the race comes and goes without a blip on the radar- Keeneland Course in central Kentucky has a tremendous fall meeting set to go at the top of October, the Shadwell Turf Mile valued at $750K is the centerpiece of that meeting- The purses being offered in Japan continue to astound one who grew up in the 100K Kentucky Derby era-the Arima Kinen around Christmas time has a purse set for 2000K!! For example- on the way back home the West Virginia Derby offers around 750,000 bucks to be divided and that race arrives this coming weekend at Mountaineer Casino and horse racing track- The season reaches its sort of climax with Santa Anita once again hosting the Breeders Cup festival beginning the last day of October in 2014 and the turbo charged BC Classic will dangle 5 millions in cold hard cash before those worthy of its entry- some other things to look forward to in 2014 is the reawakening f Zia Park come around Labor Day and the Churchill Downs meeting opening at a similar spot of the calendar- and in six weeks Woodbine course offers a 1000K spectacle in the Ricoh G! Mile and in addition later in mid-October comes the Canadian International, the race in which mightiest Secretariat closed out his brilliant career is to be renewed and of course perhaps the best race in Canada the EP Taylor mile and a quarter turf match for 3yo & up fillies and mares. Money management is the key to surviving the endless buffet of race track treats; there is so much racing to sort through almost like being in Coney Island on the 4th of July!
