Harry’s picks 090214 The winners of Graded stakes action on Labor day IN the thoroughbred realm of racing were the crying to run unbeaten Competitive Edge and a mare from the Argentine namely Miss Serendipity- winners of the prestigious G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga and Del Mar’s representation of the once jewel of the Oak Tree Santa Anita meeting, the downgraded to G2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes- Certainly if a horse ever looked like a no-brainer lock it was the Hopeful winner, a exciting son of recent Kentucky Derby hero, the impeccably bred Super Saver, the latter has come out roaring as a stud- and with his tremendous genetic background- is the most exciting sire on the scene since Pioneer of the Nile started his run of winners a few seasons back in turf time- I forget the cold steed I backed in the Hopeful? I assume he’s just about rounding the turn for home - but even if he had jet skis affixed to his hooves it is doubtful that Competitive Edge was going to be beaten- his sire Super Saver has 1-X La Troienne female family dynamo Numbered Account, as its 4th dam and the latter showed up multiple times in the pedigree of 2014 Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome, and I’ve stated in these notes on many occasions I believe Numbered Account, is the best modern broodmare influence extant- although I’m certain there would be considerable debate over that accolade- Super Saver, is a young sire star for many reasons and from my POV he is a powerful signal of the emergence of a significant sort of reinvented new line of Phalaris -The Majestic Prince strip of the Raise A Native, division of the Phalaris male line- which would read>Phalaris>Sickle (half brother of Hyperion)>Unbreakable>Polynesian>Native Dancer>Raise A Native>Majestic Prince>Majestic Light>Wavering Monarch>Maria’s Mon>Super Saver- …..that is not to say that the Majestic Prince’s have been asleep over the last 40 years, but that Super Saver appears a full blown anchor for the survival of Majestic Prince as a formidable male line to breed into- The dosage diagram for the 2014 Hopeful Stakes winner is nothing profound a workmanlike >4-3-7-0-0 with a GSV rating of 55.90 and a Dosage index of 3.00 the same number as mightiest of race horses Secretariat- as far as the female family is concerned “CE” adjusts to the 8-K group thru Thormanby’s daughter of 1853 Progress- the 8-K family are divided at the behest of Triple Cyder, a daughter of King Fergus circa 1788 (?) the latter a son of Eclipse, perhaps the greatest of all runners and sires- hence the famous saying of the English Turf - “Eclipse first the rest nowhere!”- The broodmare sire array for Competitive Edge is of concern should he stand his ground and be a factor in the 2015 classic season- >Cape Town > Dehere>Sovereign Dancer>Angle Light and the 5th dam Ajericcio was sired by Porterhouse, hardly known as a “classic” influence based on my pedigree reading experiences- some famed 8-K operatives were Awesome Humor and All Fired Up, both stemming from the immediate family group of Competitive Edge- but sadly I doubt any 8-K horse has ever won a Belmont Stakes or Kentucky Derby, and that sort of history is often difficult for a juvenile high-stepper to rise above- Miss Serendipity (ARG) stems from ff based in Argentina over the last 90 years or so- she is a straight “14” and that family thru its divisions has been “red hot” recently- from the family in general has come-Tiggy Wiggy (G2) & Postponed (G2) and Euro Charline (G1) & Ansgar (G3) & Sunset Glow the latter winning the Del Mar Debutante the other day as well as Stonetastic of the “B” division of the family 14 congress winning grades stakes at Saratoga. The dosage profile for Miss Serendipity, is not earth shaking 2-2-8-0-0 and her DI is 2.00 and I believe the gist of that equation is the lower the number the more likely the runner may last beyond a mile- her GSV rank as with many foreign bred horses is low 53.76 and there are many reason for that which I’m sure Mr. Smith will answer the interested, if one can get a hold of him out in the “Klondike”- How would Super Saver & Miss Serendipity coalesce should they ever meet in the breeding shed?- this appears a mating of good omens for Caro, one of the 3 great imported studs of the 1970’s would be shown at 4x4 thru a son and a daughter in this nuptial= (Caro, Blushing Groom & Lyphard are the sires imported to Kentucky and they are of tremendous importance) in fact Miss Serendipity has all 3 of these exceptional personages in her genetic wardrobe!!! I would certainly place a mare like Miss Serendipity, in my “little black book” of forthcoming broodmares to keep tabs on- Fairmont 1-2 2-2 3-1 4-5 5-9 6-2 7-1e 8-2 Finger lakes 1-1e 2-1 3-1 4-2 5-5 6-3 7-2 8-7 9-5 Fort Erie 1-4 2-2 3-4 4-8 5-2 6-5 7-1e 8-6 Indiana 1-3 2-6 3-6 4-1e 5-2 6-6 7-6 8-3 9-2 10-4 Mountaineer 1-5 2-3 3-1 4-2 5-1 6-3 7-1 8-5 Parx 1-2 2-1 3-1 4-2 5-2 6-5 7-3 8-1 Presque isle 1-1 2-4 3-2 4-2 5-1 6-2 7-4 8-2 h/
