Hart Island A.K.A. The Island of The Dead once ran by the N.Y.S Department of Corrections,USA, and unless you was a convict, or with G.S.H. 360 you wont be allowed to set a foot on it. Even the press is not allowed access! Oh, many mysteries surrounding this tiny island famous for one of America’s Only mass graves.,Burials on Hart Island began during the American Civil War. 1865 during which 3,413 captured Confederate soldiers, (235 of them died in the camp.), Then the island then served as a quarantine station when yellow fever hit New York in 1870. A womens insane asylum was build in 1885 (It was quickly abandoned), It is still standing today. The island then housed a reformatory for delinquent boys (also quickly abandoned) for “strange activates”. During WW II, the Island was turned over to the Navy to be used as a disciplinary barracks for Navy, Coast Guard and Marine personnel,It was again abandoned for It’s strange activates!
