Has Ajith lost his courage? The following article is by Gopalakrishnan and it is not IndiaGlitzs take towards anyone or anything. A Fans Retort The highly anti anticipated 55th film of Ajith ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ directed by Gautham is not going to release on Pongal as it has bee publicized earlier. This comes as a news of disappointment for thousands of his fans who are eagerly awaiting a ‘Thala Pongal’. While we fans are disappointented of fans over our icon’s film will not be releasing for the festival we also need to think whether releasing a film on a festival day is that all important? Speaking from the business perspective anyone who has been closely watching the new trends in Kollywood say that the postponement is a good decision even if it is made to avoid a clash with director Shankar’s magnum opus ‘I’ No one can contest the fact that Ajith still remains the ‘King of Opening’ and easily one of the toppers in the list of the Stars list, with a tremendous fan following and also has the support of people of various ages beyond his fan base who have affection and appreciation for him. Given the expectations for ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ that has been scaled new heights with the sharp cut teaser and the colorful trailer we can be assured that the film will get a fantastic opening regardless of the day of its release and competing films. But a film is not about just about opening. There are various things to be considered before fixing the release date of a film that too of a film that has a huge star like Ajith. In the most cases of high budget films these days a film has to get AT LEAST 80% vacancy in all the screens it has been screened initially, for two weeks (and three weeks in some cases) in order to be profitable for all the distributors and theatre owners concerned. The same is the case for ‘I ‘which is another biggie that has fixed a slot in the Pongal race well in advance. So clash of two biggies poses a threat and even the distributors would not wish for that. Trade pundits as well as film critics say that the decision to postpone YA will reap good not only for the production venture of A.M.Ratnam but also for ‘I’ which will get more number of screens due to this. If the film meets expectation (which is most certain to happen), ‘I’ will have a good two-three weeks run in all the screens it gets to release on day one until ‘YA’ releases towards the end of Januyar. This will add up as a huge benefit for ‘I’ which is rumored to be a Billion Budget film produced by Aascar Films V.Ravichandran. This apart It has to be admitted that Shankar is the most powerful man in Kollywood in pulling all section of audiences to theatres. If we can attribute a Superstar title to a director that will easily go to Shankar. All of his films have been superhits (and most of them are blockbusters) with ‘Boys’ being the ONLY exception. Fans of all actors, youth, family audience and also that segments which steps into a theatre hall only once in a few years will make sure that they don’t miss watching a Shankar directed film. Given it is no overstatement to say that Shankar has a bigger appeal among the entire movie watching crowd than not only Ajith but any other star of current generation actors and directors. However after this postponement, we could see a flurry of comments from fans of Vijay who trolled Ajith for “withdrawal” from competition, calling him a “Solo Star” in social networking sites. The comments also stooped down to the level that Ajith is “uncourageous” to face competition But in his acting career spanning across two decades Ajith has never been averse to competition Even for the Pongal 2014 his ‘Veeram’ gave a tough fight for his competitor and good friend Vijay starrer ‘Jilla’ and that was the seventh time, the two clashed head to head at the box office. Both films got tremendous opening and also were commercially successful despite getting mixed reviews. More over we don’t know how much does Ajith interfere or have a say on the release date of his films. The postponement may be the entire decision of the Production house. All talks about the decision to postponement are only assumptions. Even if it is a ‘fear’ let it be. A Fear leading to a safety measure when hundred crores of business and lots team hard work is involved Ajith as an individual has showed courage and straight forwardness and he is being loved by many of us for his personal traits also. He claimed that “He will become the next Superstar” in an interview given to a magazine in 2003 and faced fierce criticisms and bashes from fans of many actors and also those within the film Industry. Then on Ajith started avoiding interviews but the fact remains that he never said what he said was wrong and apologized to none. Another incident involved a show of valor in the riskiest of turfs. Ajith openly criticized the organizers of the function to thank the then Tamilnadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on behalf of the Film fraternity for sanctioning low cost lands to destitute films artistes and technicians. In the presence of the CM, a host of other politicians belonging to the then ruling party and also the likes of industry veterans like Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, Ajith said on stage that actors are being coerced to take part in such function. Ajith indeed face some untoward criticisms from various circles. There were also rumors that he was facing political pressure. He met MK in his Gopalapuram residence a few days after the function. Though he maintained it to be a courtesy call, there were rumors that the senior politician expressed his displeasure over the way Ajith spoke on that day. Even in this entire episode Ajith never apologized or took back what he said on that occasion. That calls for unparalleled COURAGE and that’s Ajith!!! Post your views in the comment box
