Has anyone ever had the thought that made you wonder about, how is - TopicsExpress

Has anyone ever had the thought that made you wonder about, how is it that we as Americans live in a supposed free market economy. One where the demand for goods and services set the prices we will pay for any given commodity sold in our places of purchase, individually or collectively. If we are to take the last statement as truth then, why is it that gasoline prices are virtually the same in every city, in every state regardless of brand name or maker? Why is it that you can buy a loaf of bread on one side of town for one dollar but, it will cost exactly the same on the other side of town? Is that really how a free market operates? or is it a free market that has supplier cooperation that maintains specific market prices for certain if not all goods and services? I wonder what would happen if, a gasoline retailer became more concerned with the volume of gasoline that was sold at his/her gas station and lowered his/her gasoline prices to the bare minimum so that he would sell massive amounts in volume by the tanker full, rather than per gallon profit margins, how would that business be viewed by the gasoline suppliers? But, isnt that what a free market system is all about, supply, and salesmanship? Or is it about a fixed system rigged to make you the consumer, believe that the market sets its own price and if that were so, where are the price wars, that see which sellers can give the best and lowest price in a free market system. Ask yourself why in a free market system are there price supports on any commodity. In a system that touts about how it is developed to allow the system prices to be set by supply and demand, there is something going on behind the scenes that we are not being told, somebody is sitting down with somebody else and they together are establishing price controls on gasoline and everything else you and I need. What is wrong with the market setting the prices for a gallon of gasoline or is this system we call free, only free for some!
