Has anyone ever seen JIGSAW, an obscure low-budget Noir from 1949? - TopicsExpress

Has anyone ever seen JIGSAW, an obscure low-budget Noir from 1949? I doubt it. I kept reading about this B picture about an extremist political group of white neo-fascists in NYC and grew so intrigued I finally tracked down a cheap Alpha copy. JIGSAW by Tower Pictures lapsed into the public domain long ago so you can just imagine what the print looks like. But its not without its positive aspects. Apparently so many big stars were impressed with the message they wanted to appear (uncredited) in this lackluster muddle. So you have folks like Henry Fonda popping up as a waiter, John Garfield as a street bum, Burgess Meredith as a bartender, Marlene Dietrich as an entertainer in a club, etc. Lots of cameos that distract you from the crude editing and bad writing. The star is Franchot Tone as a liberal special prosecutor investigating a series of murders. There is no build of tension, really, but there is great use of NY locations and an interesting climactic shoot-out in an art museum at night.
