Hashimotos Health Tip: 3 Keys to Success Hey, people! Ive been working hard on creating some new videos and animations that Im really excited to share with you and it got me thinking about 3 key areas that are essential for success. One of the most common complaints I get from people is that they spent thousands of dollars and didnt get the results they were looking for. There are lots of reasons for this, of course. But often, one of the following 3 key areas have been neglected. And they are: #1. YOU MUST ARM YOURSELF WITH KNOWLEDGE With Hashimotos you just cant leave the healing responsibility to someone else. You have to be an active player in your healing. This is not something that you can beat by just sitting back and letting someone else take the wheel. You have to be in the drivers seat and you have to be your own advocate. And heres why: Every decision you make has consequences. And making bad ones can really cost you and set you back, frustrating or even preventing you from getting better. And, frankly, many doctors and practitioners are clueless about both Hashimotos and autoimmune disease. You cant afford to be. #2 CHOOSE YOUR DOCTOR OR PRACTITIONER WISELY Even after you become knowledgeable, youre going to need help. Getting advise and perspective from someone with experience is incredibly valuable. Just make sure you are careful in choosing who you work with. Another common question I get is how should I speak with my doctor about Hashimotos and what questions should I ask? Well, the #1 question you should ask before you start working with a doctor or practitioner is do they have experience with Hashimotos? And really, do they understand the scope of this disease? As many of you know, all I do is treat Hashimotos, its my entire practice. And what Ive learned from working with hundreds of people with Hashimotos is this: It is a progressive autoimmune disease that becomes an all over your body problem as it progresses. Anyone you choose to work with must be able to see the forest for the trees and understand that this can affect every major system of your body, including: your liver, your heart, your brain, your adrenals, your gut, your stomach, your gall bladder, your emotions, your memory, your ability to reason and focus- there is virtually no aspect of your being that this doesnt affect. Because this is true, there is no single solution. No single pill, no single supplement or single packet of this or that. You need a multi-system approach. And its important to find people who diagnose and treat with an eye towards mechanics. In other words, are they focused on why you have the symptoms that you do? Many doctors and holistic practitioners practice the same way. They prescribe X for a given set of symptoms, regardless of what is causing X. This is the same approach whether its a drug or an herb or a vitamin or supplement. And this is also one of the most important reasons why treatments dont work. One particularly dangerous example of this is iodine. Some doctors and practitioners believe that iodine is the answer for everyone who is hypothyroid. Well, the problem with iodine therapy for some people with Hashimotos is that there are huge consequences if its not the right choice for you. Iodine can fire up autoimmunity like nobodys business and make things a whole lot worse. Now, I know theres lots of controversy and debate about this. And people will argue that you need the right mix of selenium, magnesium and iodine and lots of other things. Sure, but thats missing the point, which is that iodine is definitely NOT the answer for everyone. And there is always a risk benefit analysis that must be done. Is the risk worth a potential benefit? If a doctor or practitioner is focused on the mechanism, on how things work, a given group of symptoms - like common hypothyroid symptoms can lead down many different paths other than iodine deficiency. And many of these paths can yield better results at considerably less risk. In my next post, Ill discuss the third key to success which may actually be the most important of the 3. And that is the Inner Game. By that I mean your belief systems and inner narrative around what you believe about this disease and your ability to over come it. Sometimes that is the difference maker. Thoughts, comments? Let us know what you think.
