"Hattie rolled back and briefly took in the sight. Hundreds of planes twisted and turned, black trails of smoke mixing with the white contrails that crossed the deep blue sky. He saw bombers on fire and parachutes speckled the air. He saw a Spitfire burning and spinning towards the sea and Hurricanes flying through the bombers frantically firing. It was the most chaotic and desperate sight he had ever seen, men trying to kill men and men desperately trying to survive. He could sense the fear and panic and desperation. A Spitfire not more than a hundred yards from him suddenly burst into flames and exploded and a Hurricane collided with a Heinkel and both planes disintegrated before his very eyes. His plane shuttered as bullets ripped through his wing. In a surreal moment he heard the calmness of a woman’s voice gently uttering vectors to another flight of planes. It was as if he was outside of himself and his hands began to shake violently on the stick." - Chapter 21
