Haunting psychodrama to perpetuate the mood of remembrance this Samhain and today on Dia de los Muertos, the day of the dead.... Which is not to say that John Leyton is dead of course! Still gigging today...and who remembers him acting in the film The Great Escape? But this song is one of those weird-outs that has always stalked my unconscious and comes to me time and time again when I am least expecting it. I think its the manic phantom horsemen of the apocalypse drumming combining with Joe Meeks trademark freakout eerie-reverbs allied to a vocal which makes your brain itch in its manic desperation to recite a tale of loss and madness. Thats what creeps from closets and claws its way into my soul. The tunes dark spaces are injected with a spine tingling melodrama while Lissa Grays spectral and foreboding wail finishes off the whole spookathon beautifully. Surely one of the most brilliant and disturbing number ones of all time (from way back in 1961....a SUPERB year).
