Have You Drifted? Greg Weston Have you sat in a boat on a lake - TopicsExpress

Have You Drifted? Greg Weston Have you sat in a boat on a lake and just allowed it to drift? When the boat drifts, it and all in it are subject to wind and water currents. The same idea is used by Paul. This is the idea of giving up control and allowing yourself to drift. He told the Hebrew brethren, Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them (Hebrews 2:1). There was an urgency to Paul’s exhortation. Drifting spiritually was not and is not good. To avoid drifting Paul said they were to give earnest heed to the things they heard. This is not an open encouragement to continue in any tradition. In the next sentence he identified the word heard as that spoken by the apostles and confirmed by the miracles or signs which accompanied them. So we are to give earnest heed to the inspired message - the word of God. Every generation is to be warned against drifting and encouraged to hold to that word. If all were to hold to the word of the Lord we would see unity among believers. There would be a great outcry when one began to drift and great encouragement to those continuing to hold to the Lord’s instructions. It seems in the past generation the ones who are seeking new teachings are the ones being encouraged. This is not good. We need to encourage all who are living by faith, those living by the word God has given. Be bold! Hold firmly to what God has given. When a person says one church is as good as another - remind them of the one true church which Jesus built (Ephesians 4:4; Matthew 16:16-18). If someone says it doesn’t matter how we worship - remind them that Jesus said we are to worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Learn that truth, show it to them, and worship according to it. That truth includes worshiping in the spirit. Be bold and emphasize that you will live by the will of God rather than your own desires. If they drift, don’t drift with them. Drifting is departure from God, holding fast is faithfulness to Him. Be faithful!
