Have compassion. Release stigma- and most of all, set firm boundaries. Intuition trumps any textbook. The individual who qualifies for Axis II survives and thrives on social approval and the image they construct. Because they lack the neurological ability to utilize mirror neurons to feel others, they develop a highly functional conditioned social response to maintain the externally reinforced sense of identity: I.e. The ego. Once a flaw is exposed in this system, the antisocial individual will recede, regress, and capsize into a state of infancy, retreating back into the womb metaphorically and behaviorally. Antisocial and borderline traits are ultimately, the mark of a psyche that is truly vulnerable and unable to function in work or love relationships as a differentiated individual. When they are held accountable for their behaviors, the idea that THEY are inherently at fault is too psychologically painful to explore, and so the world is against them OR they are not deserving of the world. Ultimately, this personality may externally seem evil, but this clinical population actually represents a group who have the deepest and most painful of attachment wounds. -James Masterson and Otto Kernberg
