Have now read or listened to 3 of the National Short Story - TopicsExpress

Have now read or listened to 3 of the National Short Story shortlist. Hm. Staggered that Shrivers was the winner over Smiths, which is so full of life and brilliant (utterly spot-on) dialogue, whereas, as has been pointed out, Shrivers is constipated with abstract circumlocution and spells everything out in just the way a short story (or perhaps any writing) doesnt need. But, interestingly, Shrivers is the most experimental of the three: the story is a kind of experiment in hindsight, whereas Smiths is conventionally realist. Francesca Rydderchs is a pretty conventional tale, it seems to me, but it was hard to get past the soulful tone of the Radio 4 reading. I also thought there was a lack of focus of theme, which I felt was underlined by the Radio 4 discussion with her.
