Have to share this. Everyone watch. And watch carefully. Not just this video, but several sources of news daily from both liberal and conservative sources and your online friends who live in other towns. There are a large number of people trying to excuse the actions of bullies with badges in three ways: - dividing us among racial lines - turning the police and citizens against each other - making us all more distrustful of each other Why would they possibly want to do this? In his book The Culture of Fear Barry Glassner spends a great deal of time discussing this. The short and the sweet of it is that people are easier to manipulate when theyre afraid. If youre terrified, youll agree to just about anything to take the fear away--including signing your rights away. As long as you believe youre in danger, your endorphins are in overdrive--&, yeah, this effects your ability to think rationally. If a suggestion is made to change the situation youre in and it seems good (or is stated in a sufficiently confusing way), and/or provides a convenient scapegoat youll leap on it because your brain is receiving signals from the body that it is in imminent danger and is biologically programmed to flee from danger. We have come so very, very far as a species and a people. Yes, racism still exists, but it is much less of a black or white issue than a black/white or some other color. People ARE changing, and bless you, internet, you have sped up that change. The more we evolve socially the more socially aware and knowledgeable we become the less we are able to be used and abused in this way. Never forget how far we have come. Doing so is not a denial that we have further to go. Rather, it is merely an acknowledgement of our achievements necessary to encourage us to keep progressing towards that beautiful dream that Rev. King dreamed of and so eloquently shared. It can be achieved. We just cant allow people so terrified of change and the loss of the power they imagine themselves to have (or to need) to manipulate us into forgetting how far we have come or how much we have achieved.
