Have you been fooled by marketing tactics? Have you ever noticed the borage of commercials we are bombarded with to convince us about how good a product is for us after bad news came out about that product? Have you seen the commercial about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) being just lie sugar? nothing can be further from the truth, and we believe what we see on T. V. without taking into consideration the commercial is being paid for by the corn industry providing the HFCS. That applesauce sitting on the store shelf looks like it would be a healthy food choice, until you inspect it closer to find that the ingredient list includes high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Unfortunately, just about all processed applesauce is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, which is what you’ll find in the majority of supermarkets; even if the label says “all-natural.” A “natural” applesauce can contain HFCS, since the rules say if it wasn’t used to “process” the apples but is added after processing, it can still be labeled “natural.” Last week over lunch with Dr. Bruce Ames, one of the foremost nutritional scientists in the world and Dr. Jeffrey Bland, a nutritional biochemist, a student of Linus Pauling and I reviewed the existing science, and Dr. Ames shared shocking new evidence from his research center on how HFCS can trigger body-wide inflammation and obesity. 1 Sugar in any form causes obesity and disease when consumed in pharmacologic doses. 2 HFCS and cane sugar are NOT biochemically identical or processed the same way by the body. 3 HFCS contains contaminants including mercury that are not regulated or measured by the FDA. 4 Many independent medical and nutrition experts DO NOT support the use of HFCS in our diet, despite the assertions of the corn industry. 5 HCFS is almost always a marker of poor-quality, nutrient-poor disease creating industrial food products or "food-like substances." Stick with natural products, make your own food whenever possible and read labels. If you see HFCS do NOT buy it. Unfortunately we are not always aware of HCFS in our food so take control of what you do understand and can recognize as being dangerous.
