Have you ever considered the significance of the little word “but”? This small three letter word is what we call a conjunction. Even though it is not a large word it carries significant influence in its meaning and use. It introduces a statement that either disagrees with something just stated or expresses surprise or disbelief at what was just said. If we really paid close attention we would find that we use this word quite frequently in our everyday life, if not verbally at least in how we react to situations. For example: “I would have been here on time, but traffic slowed me down” or “I would have responded to the Lord today, but I was afraid of what people would say.” This small little word carries great impact. We will be examining the use of this word as uttered by two men and discover the way we use it today when confronted with similar callings in our life. I am not advocating that we ban the use of “but”, instead I am stating we should be very selective in how we respond to what Jesus is calling us to do.
