Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a strain and a sprain? First, a strain is an injury to the muscle and/ or tendon. A tendon is a fibrous cord of tissue that attaches the muscle to the bone. Typically a strain is the result of prolonged and repetitive movements, or overuse of a muscle and/ or tendon. A strain is usually caused by inadequate rest breaks during training, overstretching, or excessive muscle contraction. A few symptoms of a strain include pain, muscle spasm, muscle weakness, swelling, inflammation, and cramping. Second, a sprain is a stretch and/ or a tear of a ligament. A ligament is the fibrous band of connective tissue that connects the end of one bone with the end of another bone. The ligaments help to stabilize and provide support to the body’s joints. A sprain is caused by a type of trauma such as a fall, blow to the area, etc. that causes the joint to be knocked out of position which results in overstretching of the ligament or in severe cases a rupture. Some symptoms of a sprain include pain, bruising, swelling, and inflammation which will vary in intensity due to the degree of injury.
