Have you heard of Tompkinsville? In the middle of the Great Depression, several fed up coal miners in the small community of Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia built the first housing co-op in Canada. With the help renegade priest Jimmy Tompkins, these miners, who had little to no education, also went on to build the first credit union in Nova Scotia, a library, a community garden, and a co-op store. Lindsay Kyte, a talented playwright from Reserve Mines and grandniece of one the co-op founders, will be in St. Catharines this Saturday to tell us these and other stories of co-operation, and how she came to develop her play "Tompkinsville".
