Have you used new technologies while studying at CDS in the past - TopicsExpress

Have you used new technologies while studying at CDS in the past 3-5 years? If so, we want your opinions! Background You are invited to participate in a research project which is being carried out by Professor. Lorraine Leeson and Mr. Haaris Sheikh (Trinity College Dublin) and Professor Myriam Vermeerbergen (KU Leuven, Belgium). The research project title is: New Technologies in Teaching and Learning Deaf Studies: A Preliminary exploration of bilingual bimodal learning patterns Who might participate? Current students at CDS or individuals who have graduated in the past 3 years. What will I have to do? If you choose to participate, you will attend a focus group meeting at the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin on Monday 8 July date at 18.30 time to discuss your experience of working with multimedia materials and digital learning objects in Irish Sign Language/English. We are interested in knowing how you work with and create materials in ISL alongside or independent from English materials. We would like to explore with you the strategies you use when preparing academic texts in ISL or English and which language/modality you prefer working in for different kinds of assignments. Benefits and Risks While there is no economic benefit to you from participating in this process, the discussion will offer an opportunity to reflect on the strategies that you use in teaching/learning. You may find that information about your ways of working with data is helpful to others who attend and/’or that you learn about other strategies that may be useful. There are no known risks associated with participation in this process. Participation is wholly voluntary. Process The meeting will take no more than 1 hour. Refreshments will be available on the day. Professor Lorraine Leeson will facilitate the focus group meeting/s. At the meeting, we will keep a written note of what you say, but we will not keep a record of your name. We will make general statements like “L1 ISL user noted” or “L1 English user noted” so that we can see if there are differing strategies that users of ISL as a first or second language apply when reviewing or preparing materials in ISL. The only documentation that will relate to your participation will be a signed consent form. All participants will be asked to sign a consent form on the day of the focus group meeting. Participants will keep one copy for their records and a second copy will be kept by Professor Lorraine Leeson. This data will be kept in a locked cabinet in her office and will not be shared with anyone else. These documents will be destroyed 5 years after completion of the project. After the meeting, a copy of the notes will be emailed to all participants. If you feel that there is something missing or something not recorded as you think it should be, you are invited to advise Lorraine Leeson of this within 7 days. The note from the meeting will then be modified and the final version of the notes circulated to all participants. Interested? Please RSVP to Professor Lorraine Leeson at [email protected] by Thursday 4th July 2013. (We ask you to RSVP so we can make sure that we have an appropriate room and, if necessary, interpretation for the meeting). Other queries? Contact Professor Lorraine Leeson at [email protected]
