Having been in Eastern Island just las year I do coincide with the hypothesis that enviromental constraint were responsible for causing the cuasi demise of these people. For instance few people know that in Eastern Island there are no rivers. The island is too small.. Water was stored using stones in the surface and conserving it in the under ground. Just a couple of year with no rain and you are done!!. The population of Rapa Nui problalby fluctiated from some 2000 to a top number of some 15000. A couple of year of bad harvest and they starved. However there were always a few huindred that survived. Did the construction of thea Moais had anythig ti do with it? Probably since vegetation influences wheather and rain.
