Having been undecided for a while I’ve not been very vocal regarding the independence referendum. But in the past week or two I’ve decided to vote yes. For those who are interested in my opinion or are maybe undecided themselves I’ll quickly summarise some reasons that swayed me, I ken no one wants to read an essay. Scotland has oil, there’s no definitive answer as to when it may run out, but short term it is a valuable resource. Beyond that Scotland has one of the best climates in the Europe, possibly the world upon which to base renewable energy programmes. I don’t think there is an issue with an independent Scotland being self-sufficient. A currency union is almost certain. Regarding the economy I don’t doubt there may be a slight dip after a breakaway. Maybe there will need to be tax increases to cover our services for a while, but I truly believe that with long term control of our own finances that a better standard of living can be expected for the people of Scotland. A point less publicised but something I think is important is our tie to the UK and it’s handling of Foreign affairs - recent terrorist activities deliberately target US/UK citizens in an attempt to unsettle their respective governments. We have a chance to distance ourselves from both past and future decisions made by Westminster. Scotland becomes less involved and less relevant to extremist groups if it is no longer governed by/associated with the UK – protecting the lives of our people at home and abroad. Given the current and potential state of national relations it seems better to me to remove ourselves from union with a desperately unpopular western regime. Finally it seems to me that we are almost at the point of no return, 2 or 3 years ago I would have said that a no vote would end a campaign for independence. However I now believe it would continue, and it would maybe be 10 or 15 years before any potential breakaway was proposed again. I think whilst we have the chance to take control of our own country we should take it!
