Having no dog in the fight that is this years NFL playoffs Im enjoying the rants of mostly Cowboys haters about the worse call in playoff history. Well, youngsters your Uncle Doyle is here to give you a history lesson. There always have been and always will be blown calls, and one screw-up by the refs helped make the NFL what it is today because it resulted in the Greatest Game Ever Played -- the Colts 23-17 overtime victory over the New York Football Giants in the 1958 championship game. Only problem is that late in the game the Giants ran for a first down -- Frank Gifford I think -- and were set to run out the clock, but defensive end Gino Marchetti broke his leg and when the refs remarked the ball it was placed where the third-down play began. NYFG then punted and Unitas drove the Colts to the tying 17-17 field goal. Also, the fact the Lions got off a 10-yard punt and gave up a fourth-and-6 makes it tough to blame the non-call for losing the game. Now, if you want to see a non-call -- because it happened on the final play -- that decided a game watch the video of this non-call for pass interference against the 49ers when the NYFG botch a field goal, but have an illegible receiver pulled down inside the 10.
