Having recently been nominated to pick my top 10 books I thought Id give it a go.... 1) His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman Still my favourite series of all time and a must read every year. Its such an incredible example of worldbuilding and epic storytelling. 2) The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde Kickstarting the Thursday Next series in style, Jasper Fforde remains a master of literary humour and I love how he plays with printing and publishing convention. 3) The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier A beautiful and understated book that deserves to be read much more widely than it is. 4) The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis An incredible series that I love as much now as I did 20 years ago and thats an impressive feat. 5) The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon Epic and gothic, dark and mysterious, Zafons Shadow of the Wind is a modern classic. 6) The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller This reimagining of legendary hero Achilles seen through the eyes of his lover Patroclus is a beautiful romance and a captivating read. 7) Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling Its hard now to imagine the literary landscape of the 21st century without JKs boy wizard and pals and like most of us I was as gripped as any by the time book 7 came around 8) The Book Thief by Marcus Zuzak Deaths narration of Zuzaks novel is what cements this as an innovative and engaging read. 9) Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawks The standout for me of the comedy-challenge-travel genre and a laugh out loud read. 10) Winnie-the-Pooh & The House at Pooh Corner by A.A.Milne An essential part of childhood and a lifelong favourite. Honourable mentions to The Passage by Justin Cronin and Atonement by Ian McEwan.
