Having witnessed the medical profession personally in this kind of procedure, i tend to believe that some in the medical field should not be practicing medicine in any form...................................................................................................... Sidebar Should you let "sleeping" lumps lie? Currently, there is a very large discussion taking place in the medical community over whether early cancer detection really warrants any intervention at all. The debate is particularly strong in the case of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)--a non-invasive form of breast cancer with a recurrence rate below 30 percent, even with lumpectomy. When I was in medical school, DCIS was considered a relatively benign condition. Today, doctors are recommending full mastectomies to women with this diagnosis. Before you have your breasts removed, be aware that the jury is still out on this one. I think DCIS is a manageable condition--one that can be addressed safely and effectively with proper diet, exercise, and increased vigilance through rigorous screening. Any woman seeking to avoid unnecessary surgery should choose an oncologist who shares this philosophy. Sources: 1.
