Hawker had however based the song on a popular proverb used in Cornwall: And shall Trelawny die? Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why! Hawker, a churchman, attributed the Trelawny mentioned in this proverb to Bishop Jonathan Trelawny who was imprisoned in the Tower of London by James II in 1688. However it is more likely that it was his grandfather, Sir John Trelawny, a Cornish Royalist leader who had been imprisoned by parliament in 1628, who was the subject of the proverb.
