Hayley Kebbell (Year 11) and Emma Slater (Year 12) participated in the State finals of the annual Evatt United Nations Youth competition. The first round of this competition involved 300 teams from schools across Victoria, with only fifteen teams making it through to the State finals. Hayley and Emma represented Guatemala in this final round, and participated in UN style debate, questioning and negotiations with the other fourteen teams on the topics of sovereignty, human rights and the current question of Syria. The level of debate was extremely impressive from all schools, and it was pleasing to see so many young people sharing their interest in current world affairs. Hayley and Emma are to be congratulated on their self-motivation in organising their entry into this competition, and the preparation that they did in order to participate so successfully. They demonstrated courage through their speeches and questioning, teamwork through their ability to negotiate, and open-mindedness and fairness through their capacity to consider the plight of people from around the world. Perhaps most impressive was their positive mindset and awareness of their success in making it to the State finals. Congratulations Hayley and Emma!
