He Will Be In You: Not Virtual Reality “[God] gives the Spirit without measure.” John 3:34 Romans 8:26-27; 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 I want to take a little more time to talk about the truth we studied yesterday, because it is so important for you to understand. The coming of the Holy Spirit to permanently indwell God’s people means that we have unlimited power and spiritual resources available to us. In the Person of the Spirit, Jesus Christ’s presence is now with each of us fully, because He is now present among us without the limitation of the flesh. See, when Jesus was on earth, if he went to Peter’s house to be with Peter, he couldn’t be at your house or mine to fellowship with us. But through the indwelling Spirit you have Christ’s fullness with you at the same time I have Christ’s fullness with me. The same is true for His power. The Apostle John wrote his first letter to second-generation believers who had not seen Jesus. Yet even though they had not seen or touched Jesus in the flesh, these later believers could have full fellowship with those who had (1 John 1:1-3). Paul gives us some indications of the Spirit’s powerful presence in today’s reading. The Holy Spirit is actively at work in our prayers, interpreting them to the Father. He also gives life, which is the ultimate act of power. When we talk about Jesus and the Holy Spirit in the same breath, as Paul does in 2 Corinthians 3:17, we are talking about two different Persons with one purpose, because, as we noted yesterday, they are both Christ. And you have all of the Spirit, as John tells us in the verse above. The powerful presence of the Spirit allows you to enter a realm of spiritual power that in your natural state you could never enter. Right now you can go to an electronics store and buy a glove that goes with one of those video games. Or you can put on a helmet and other equipment and enter into the realm of the game you are playing. They call it virtual reality. The Holy Spirit is total reality. He has taken us into another realm, the “heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Nothing can top that. You have as much spiritual power at your fingertips as the next believer. The question is what you’re going to do with it. Posted by David Coleman of The DC Ministry “Sharing The Gospel.”
