He had to free them because it was political strategy. The North had no need for slaves because of the cotton gin. Northern industries needed the raw materials produced by the South (ie cotton, sugar, ect). Don’t get it twisted the North despised Blacks as much as the South, & alone the fact that they were becoming too numerous was just one main reason. The South wanted to also keep their political power through the 3/5 Compromise which had to do with taxation, but it also meant that if a slaveholder had 3 slaves then he had 5 votes. This gave the South enormous political power, as well as industrial. The South didn’t need the North because they could trade internationally with foreign countries. The North were actually trying to emancipate themselves!!! The abolishment of slavery would minimize or neutralize the South’s grip on the country, & thus pave the way for Capitalism. Why enslave a few million when you can enslave the world with neo-colonialism? frontpagemag/2013/walter-williams/the-truth-about-abraham-lincoln-slavery/ In an 1858 letter, Lincoln said, “I have declared a thousand times, and now repeat that, in my opinion neither the General Government, nor any other power outside of the slave states, can constitutionally or rightfully interfere with slaves or slavery where it already exists.” In a Springfield, Ill., speech, he explained, “My declarations upon this subject of negro slavery may be misrepresented, but can not be misunderstood. I have said that I do not understand the Declaration (of Independence) to mean that all men were created equal in all respects.” Debating with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln said, “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of … making voters or jurors of Negroes nor of qualifying them to hold office nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality.”
